The Chicken Port is a small former fishing village, about 50 km south of Recife. It is located in a beautiful landscape with endless sandy beaches and palm trees.
Porto de Galinhas (Chicken Port) offers numerous activities: swimming, kite surfing, boat tours and horse riding are available. Buggy tours and Jeep safaris are also popular. The place also
offers many bars and restaurants with live music for evening entertainment. Its turquoise sea swimming pools ("Piscinas Naturais") are particularly well known. At low tide you can snorkel there
among colorful fish. The Brazilian travel magazine Viagem e Turismo has voted Porto de Galinhas the most beautiful beach in Brazil several times - a well-deserved award!
You can see chickens everywhere in Porto de Galinhas. There is even a fried egg in the town's coat of arms. A look into history helps to understand this.
Porto de Galinhas was originally called "Porto Rico", the "rich port". The name came from the export of precious woods and sugar. At the same time, slaves were imported from Africa. This trade
was banned in the 18th century.
Nevertheless, the business continued illegally. The slaves were from then on hidden between chicken cages. "Chicken" became the code word for slaves. The phrase "There are new chickens in the
port" (tem galinha nova no porto) meant that a ship full of slaves had arrived.
Porto de Galinhas has an 18-kilometer-long, fine white sandy beach. The northern section includes the beaches "Pontal do Cupe", "Muro Alto" and "Camboa". These become quieter and more natural towards the north. The touristy southern part includes "Praia Porto de Galinhas" and "Pontal de Maracaípe" embedded in a dreamlike landscape, surrounded by endless, beautiful sandy beaches with palm groves.
Almost the entire beach of Porto de Galinhas is protected by an offshore reef. At low tide, this creates natural swimming pools that you can visit with a jangada. You can splash around and snorkel without worry. The small rafts look very fragile, but are seaworthy. Nowadays they are mainly used to ferry tourists around.
The beaches of Porto de Galinhas are a major attraction of the fishing village. Another is the coral reef, which is only 200 meters from the beach. It is the second largest in the world and
extends into the state of Alagoas. At low tide, natural swimming pools, the "Piscinas Naturais", are created. Colorful fish frolic in these in the clear, warm water.
This phenomenon is ideal for snorkeling. If you want to cool off away from the beach, you have the opportunity to observe marine life up close. With the jangadas you can visit almost all of the
natural pools in one day. Please note: For environmental reasons, the number of visitors per day is limited in some places. Check before visiting whether the visitor limit has been reached.
